M+S and the Arium

Didn’t we have a lovely day the day we went to Leeds last Wednesday?

35 of us first headed to Marks and Spencer Archives in the grounds of Leeds University, where we all enjoyed a cuppa and heard about how Mr. Michael Marks met Mr. Tom Spencer who, together, started their penny bazaar and the rest is history.

After lunch in the city we made our way to the ‘Arium’, an amazing plant nursery, one of the largest in the country, and operated by Leeds city council.

We started off with an interesting guided tour of the greenhouses and were then escorted to the restauraant where we were treated to a sumptuous never ending afternoon tea, then groaning with over indulgence and complete with doggy bags we headed for home.

Ramblers blow the cobwebs away

7 of the ramblers took a very windswept hike yesterday from Abbey Village to Darwen Tower, a climb of 1100 feet and just under 9 miles distance. Starting from the Hare and Hounds pub ( always good to begin ( and end) at a pub) we walked across a very well made path to Rake Brook, the first of the three reservoirs in the area. Pausing to watch the antics of a spaniel, who clearly covered at least 50% more ground than its human companion, we descended into woodland which forms part of the Witton Weavers Way, a long distance route we have walked many times in the past. Family History Group

Due to polling this group will not be able to meet on the 4th May, so the next meeting will be on the 11th May at 2:00 pm at Lydiate Village Centre. Our speaker will be Kate Hurst who has been to our group on a previous occasion and whose talk then met with great enthusiasm by the group.

On the 11th her talk is entitled ‘Gamekeepers and Innkeepers’ and is a story of the gamekeepers and innkeepers in Kate’s family, who travelled from Suffolk to Nottinghamshire (via Essex, Yorkshire, North Wales and Lincolnshire) between 1800 and 1930.  Her talk will consist anecdotes of not only how her ancestors lived but how their employers lived as well. It promises to be an informative tale of ‘how the other half lived’ and more.

Appley Bridge to Burscough

Fifteen stramblers met at Burscough Bridge Station and caught the train to Appley Bridge last Thursday (27th). We made our way to the canal bank and took the towpath back towards Burscough. This was the anniversary of the original Canal Walking Group reaching Leeds in 2018, with ten of that group present today. We passed Appley Lock and Continue reading

T& S does SP

12 members of the Technology and Science group visited the Scottish Power control centre in Prenton last Wednesday.  We were given a most excellent presentation by Jon and Sue that covered  topics including the generation, power distribution networks, outages and call centre activity.

We were then shown around the ‘control room’ and given a close display of the Maghull area network by Kevin, who fielded all our questions.

We finished with Sue and a Q+A session regarding outages and their effects.

Thanks to all the staff and to Bill for organising the day.

We hope to visit a local factory in Knowsley in early June so watch this space.
