Following the published Government road map to ease lockdown, we will be able to restart the rambles. However, as the rule of 6 for outdoor activity only comes into place at the end of March, we have decided to delay the start of the rambles until Thursday 6th May to allow for any movement in the dates. Rule of 6 will apply until restrictions are lifted. Details of the ramble will be published here in mid April. It’ll be great to get out and about again, however to comply with insurance, please ensure you have renewed your membership for 2021 before the walk. Details of how to do this are featured on the website.

WAMOT – walk a mile or two
What can we say?
After setting a ‘group’ walking target of 1000 miles in September it was decided to have another go in October. Both targets achieved with miles to spare. So then a new target of 5000 miles for the quarter (Sep-Nov) was set and, guess what, we hit 5111 miles.
It really is a credit to all 35 folk in the group for having a go. From the zimmer frame stroller with a mile at a time to the canal bank strider doing 5 miles a day its a brilliant achievement so well done to all and special thanks to Brenda for the sums.
‘side by side’ maps
Here is a link to a new type of mapping service from the National Library of Scotland that displays a map along side a photographic image of the relevant area. The maps and the images can be selected independently and the whole of the UK is covered
This may be of interest to various groups especially as some maps go back to 1885 and come in various ‘flavours’. Enjoy
WAMOT -1000 mile challenge
Walk A Mile Or Two
In early September 2020 the group was set a target of a “cumulative 1000 walked miles” for the month.
This target was easily achieved when 1700 miles were logged by September 30th
Well done to all who participated.

A sunny Cheshire Ramble
Fifteen members of the Rambling group, plus a four legged friend, enjoyed a lovely walk today in bright sunshine. Starting from the outskirts of Frodsham we followed the Carriage Drive into the woods climbing upwards towards Helsby Hill. Having clambered down then climbed up, we emerged onto the crag of Helsby Hill, and took the opportunity to have a quick break whilst enjoying the lovely views which enabled us to see as far as the cathedrals on Hope street. Ramblers tackle the Beacon Loop
19 Ramblers met at Beacon Country Park in Upholland this morning to tackle the Beacon Loop, a circular walk of just under 10 miles taking in Roby Mill, Dalton. Appley Bridge, and Ashurst Beacon. After the overnight rain we set off in dry conditions, and the sun made its presence felt, and at our first drink stop many of the walkers divested themselves of layers and t shirts were in evidence. Crossing fields and pasture land we encountered some very muddy tracks, which were bad on Sunday when the final recce was done, but with the overnight rain they were a challenge even to the most sure footed folk. WAMOT – Walk A Mile or Two
1000 miles in September?
We are thinking of a challenge we can do for September. Maybe try and walk 1000 miles between us during the month . So we are trying to encourage members to do a little often . With the number we have in the group if they all did a mile a day we would reach 600 so 1000 is achievable .
I will keep you informed – Brenda
WAMOT – Walk a mile or two
The new group had its second stroll on Sunday August 9th with 16 members taking part. A pleasant and easy stroll of about 2 miles starting and ending at Maghull station followed by coffee in Bernies.
Another stroll is planned for next Sunday going in the opposite direction.
Please contact any of the ‘leaders’ to be included in the walk. It is essential that you are familiar with the current ‘covid’ restrictions and have up to date membership.
See the group page for these details.
Downholland Dawdle
20 members of the rambling group enjoyed a lovely 8.5 mile meander today. Again we were lucky with the weather, ideal for walking, not too hot, but warm enough for shorts and t-shirts. Leaving from the Ship Inn at Haskayne, splitting into 3 groups and following all social distancing guidelines, we walked through Barton Cutting nature reserve, onto the Leeds Liverpool canal through to Halsall, before walking up onto Gorse Hill for a picnic lunch stop. It was here that Dave helpfully pulled the sole off Paul’s shoe, which had been flapping for some considerable time! Thankfully there was only a bit of road work on the walk, or it could have been quite uncomfortable walking just on a cardboard inner!. Passing along the edge of the nature reserve we came up to Gorse Hill Reservoir, where once again United Utilities were digging away, Unusual wildlife was in evidence in one of the gardens we passed, then circuiting back though Lydiate we returned to our start point at the Ship where some of us enjoyed liquid refreshment in the beer garden. Thanks to Alan, and his four legged friend for leading the walk. The next ramble is on Thursday 3rd September. route yet to be decided!
WAMOT – Walk a mile or two !
It is important to stay active, sit less and move more for your physical, mental health and wellbeing. Sunday Strollers usually meets once a month at present but the group decided to meet more often and complete 5 miles local walks.
Four members of the Sunday Strollers decided to form another group that would help members who do not want to walk 5 miles. The group has been called Walk a Mile or Two and completes local walks up to 2 miles.
11 members took part in the first walk which was just less than 2 miles and we plan to do another walk this Sunday 9th August, which is just over 1.5 miles. Social distancing rules are followed. If you want to be involved in either groups please text Brenda McKenzie on 07900525222 for further details.
