8 members of the Rambling group took to the moors above Rochdale yesterday for a 9 mile circular route over Rooley Moor and the Cotton Famine road. 14 members of the rambling group met today in the village of Scorton, about 8 miles south of Lancaster, to enjoy a ramble through the surrounding countryside. Scorton is on the banks of the River Wyre and is particularly fortunate in its location, being only a short way from the A6 and yet on the edge of the Forest of Bowland, an ‘Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty’. Scorton meaning ‘farmstead near a ditch or ravine’ is a village in the parish of Nether Wyresdale. It was developed around the cotton mill and railway in the nineteenth century, although there are records of the village and catholic church in Scurton, or Scorton, tracing back to the seventeenth century. 9 of the Ramblers group met today in North Wales to climb the slightly less popular Moel Fenlli rather than the very busy Moel Famau. Starting from The Druids Inn just beyond Loggerheads we did a 1.8 add on circular walk through some lovely forest and alongside a river where the wild garlic was very prolific. Continue reading
12 Intrepid ramblers set out from the Spread Eagle Inn on Thursday to walk the 6 mile circular trail to Beacon Hill. The day turned out to be one where we encountered all four seasons in one day including a fierce wind at the trig point that threatened to blow us over the edge……needless to say we didn’t linger long!
9 hardy ( or maybe foolhardy) souls set out yesterday for an 8 mile ramble around the Stocks reservoir in the Gisburn Forest just over the Yorkshire Border. There should have been 11 of us but 2 got lost on the way and eventually did their own 5 mile walk in the area! 🙂 Setting off in reasonably dry weather we followed well marked paths through the forest owned by United Utilities which is the forest of Bowland area of outstanding natural beauty. Sadly the low cloud and general mizzle stopped any far reaching views but we all agreed on a clear bright sunny day the area would be beautiful. Continue reading
For our February walk 13 members on the Ramblers Group completed a circular walk of just over 9 miles around Penwortham near Preston.
Our walk, which was favoured with dry and mild weather, took in parks, a nature reserve and a section of the Ribble Way on (mostly) good footpaths and quiet lanes.
After the walk the group enjoyed a welcome lunch at The Fleece Inn at Penwortham.
14 very hardy members of the Rambling group took an 8 mile meander on the Wirral yesterday. Spirits were high on the train at the prospect of a bracing walk in the fresh air, but soon plummeted as the train emerged from the Mersey tunnels to find the weather on the Wirral was inclement to say the least!
