WAMOT – Two Sundays !

What a difference a day makes to the Sunday strollers group.  Last Sunday (23rd) it was wet and miserable. This Sunday it was blue, cloudless skies and a full house of 21 walkers, strolling in the sun. 2.3 miles from Maghull station, along the canal to Brewery Lane, a turn around Balls Wood and back to the station.  All topped off with breakfast and coffee.

Unlike last Sunday, where we started in Lydiate, walked up to Town Green and back under dark, gloomy skies and an almost constant drizzle.

The good news is that both occasions brought out hardy, hearty and interesting company to drive away the Covid blues.  Here are some images from both walks.

Have you signed up for the ‘1000 mile in September‘ challenge.  The idea is for our U3A  ‘Walk A Mile Or Two‘ walkers to aggregate there miles walked in September.  Can we get over the 1000 miles target together?  Contact Brenda McKenzie to add your miles.

WAMOT – Walk a mile or two !

It is important to stay active, sit less and move more for your physical, mental health and wellbeing. Sunday Strollers usually meets once a month at present but the group decided to meet more often and complete 5 miles local walks.

Four members of the Sunday Strollers decided to form another group that would help members who do not want to walk 5 miles. The group has been called Walk a Mile or Two and completes local walks up to 2 miles.

11 members took part in the first walk which was just less than 2 miles and we plan to do another walk this Sunday 9th August, which is just over 1.5 miles. Social distancing rules are followed. If you want to be involved in either groups please text Brenda McKenzie on 07900525222 for further details.

Sunday Strollers – Had to Adapt

Due to weather conditions the Sunday Strollers walk had to be re-arranged, then the walk had to be changed.

We decided to walk from Moreton to New Brighton as underfoot would be good.  Just as we started the walk the sun came out, however the wind on the front was very strong but thankfully it was behind us which helped us complete the 6 mile walk in 2 hours.

David helped to make the walk interesting by sharing information on the local area and we finished off enjoying lunch at the local Wetherspoons.  We are going to Sefton Park next month to see the Field of Hope.  Fingers crossed the weather is good.

Due to the popularity of this group we are unable to take any more members.  However, if anyone would like to start another Sunday Strollers Group we would be able to provide you with walks to do.  Come to the Group Leaders Support desk on a Tuesday morning.

Sunday Strollers – 5 mile walk

28 members joined the Sunday Stroll today.  We now have 34 members and have had to close the group as it has become so big. We are looking to start another group so if you fancy leading it please come to the Group Leaders Support desk on a Tuesday morning. We would be able to provide walks that you could do.

The group have been going 4 years and started with just three members.  We are off to Chester next month and Sefton Park in March.

Sunday Strollers Port Sunlight

18 members of the Sunday Strollers enjoyed a great walk and talk in Port Sunlight.  David Scott made the day so interesting and it is great to have new members joining us.

We had a tea break in a great little cafe and finished the day in the new Wetherspoons opposite James Street. Everyone agreed the day had been a great success.

Our next walk is on 17th November.  We are meeting at Southport Railway Station at 11 o clock.  If you want to join this group please email Brenda McKenzie on mnmck21@aol.com  who will add you to the email group.  I will email final details nearer the time.

I am leading a Sefton Active walk on 10th November.  We will be meeting at Hall Lane Lydiate at the side of St Mary’s Church which is opposite the Hayloft at 2.20 the walk will start at 2.30.  The walk will be about 4.5 miles at a steady pace.  More details can be found in the latest Active Sefton booklet or at the Group Supprt Desk from 5th November.

Sunday Strollers 18th August

15 members of the Sunday Strollers got the local bus to Walton Road and walked up to Everton Football Ground.  We went and had a look at the statue, that has recently been erected outside the club’s stadium, of three of Everton’s greatest players.  Known as the “Holy Trinity”, they were regarded as the best midfield trio in England in the 1960s. They were Alan Ball, Howard Kendal and Colin Harvey

Then on to Anfield Cemetery and enjoyed an interesting walk around the grounds. In 1854 Liverpool Corporation issued an order prohibiting any further burials in the city’s overcrowded cemeteries. Land was subsequently obtained so that a new cemetery could be formed. The total cost, including the purchase of the land, came to more than £150,000 and the first interment in Anfield Cemetery, sometimes known as Liverpool Cemetery, took place in 1863. The layout was designed by Edward Kemp (1817-91), though T D Barry won the original competition. A crematorium was built near the southern edge of the site 1894-6. Two of the three original cemetery chapels have been demolished and one of the pair of Priory Road Lodges has also been lost.

Sunday Strollers – 21st July

Sunday Strollers next walk is on 21st July.  We will meet at Maghull South (old station) in time to catch the 9.49 train to Liverpool.

We will change onto the Southport train at Sandhills and get off at Hall Road.  We should arrive at Hall Road at 10.30 appox.  If you are meeting us at Hall Road please let me know so we can look out for you. We will then walk down to the front and walk to Hightown train station were we will catch the Southport train to Freshfield.  We will then make our way to the Pinewoods pub and have lunch.  After lunch we will walk back to station and catch train back to Maghull.
Because we are having breaks this walk should suit all of our walkers and we have always had a good lunch at the Pinewoods Pub. They serve Sunday lunch and a variety of other meals and snacks.

Here is a picture taken on our February walk in Southport.  The weather on Sunday looks like it will be a lot warmer than that day with showers forecast at 1pm.  Hopefully we will be in the pub by then

Sunday Strollers 17th March

15 walkers took the wind head on in Southport today.  The sun did come out and the rain stayed away but the cobwebs were definitely blown away!  The fish and chip lunch went down very well after our 3 mile steady walk.  We all agreed that we had never seen waves so high in the lake in Southport before it looked like the Mersey!.  You can see in the picture above.  Also we were all happy to following the notice that said “No Swimming”  Thank you to Margaret McLoughlin for leading the walk.

There is no walk next month as it is due on Easter Sunday.  Our next walk is on 19th May when we will be going to Chester.  This will be more of  “A Who Done It” .  We will find the answers to clues which can be found around Chester.  This is something new we are willing to try.  We will finish up having lunch and hopefully we will be successful in solving all the clues.  Travelling arrangements will be posted on this site nearer the time.
