Stramblers walk near Chorley

A group of sixteen Stramblers met at Yarrow Valley Country Park Visitor Centre on 27th July looking forward to a pleasant walk around the area. The weather forecast indicated that after some initial rain it would brighten up. The walk started from the car park where we noticed an interesting face carved on one of the nearby trees.
Anne outlined a little of the history of the valley, which was a large, industrialised area in the 18th century and beyond. It was a centre for bleaching, dyeing, calico printing and mining. We set off along Lunt Road and soon took a footpath into fields, which followed the course of a brook, quaintly named “St Helen’s Gutter”. The brook leads to St Helen’s Well on the other side of Lunt Road which is thought to be 600 years old.

On a grey, overcast morning, twenty two Stramblers met at Aughton Park Station to follow the Yellowhammer Route Walk. We started along Long Lane, crossing Prescot Road and Holborn Hill. Twenty yards or so down Holborn Hill we turned on to a path past a small housing estate, then through a field. This took us to a pumping station at a reservoir (with a boxer on guard).
