Fourteen walkers met at the London Bridge pub on the Bridgewater Canal at Stockton Heath. The weather was warm and sunny so coats were left in cars. The staff at the pub let us use their facilities and we chose our meals before setting off across the A49 and along Mitchell Street to the canal towpath at Thorne Marine. We walked along the canal Continue reading
Fourteen walkers met at the Springbrook pub in Grappenhall, where the staff opened up early to let us use the facilities and order our meals for the end of the walk. Ken gave everyone a print out of the route, but most of us were happy to follow Ken and Shirley who had done the recce for us. We crossed Continue reading
For today’s walk we met at the Swan With Two Nicks pub in Little Bollington, which we knew from a previous walk. The pub takes its name from the practice of marking ownership of swans with nicks on their beaks. The practice died out with the advent of ringing on the legs.

Sixteen walkers met at the Navigation Hotel in Broadheath near Altrincham, where the management had given us an exemption from the three hour maximum parking restriction and allowed us use of the “facilities”. The towpath was only a minute’s walk over the bridge from the pub and we set off along it towards Sale. Continue reading
We met at the Lowry Centre in Salford Quays at the end of the Manchester Ship Canal on a grey day. Setting off along the quay and Ontario Basin, we made our way across Trafford Road and into Ordsall Park. Here we had a good view of Continue reading

There had been Continue reading

Today’s walk was originally planned for July but, bizarrely for England, was cancelled due to the hot weather! Because of holidays and other commitments our number was reduced to thirteen this time.
We parked our cars at the Ship Inn at Lathom and took taxi minibuses to the river lock at Tarleton where the canal meets the River Douglas. Continue reading
At a celebratory meal at the L20 Restaurant in Bootle on 6th June, David Scott presented each walker with a certificate of completion of all 127 and a half miles of the Leeds Liverpool Canal. The certificates were designed and printed by Anne and John Blundell. Well done everyone!
