Membership renewals

These are in the Sanctuary 2^nd April and next Tuesday the 9^th from 9:45 to 10:45 am. Cheques are preferred if possible, or if cash please use a £5 note and only one £1 coin to assist the Treasury team transporting the money to the bank.

Walking groups

Both out on Thursday this week. Easy walkers 5 mile walk on Wirral way. Meet at Maghull station to catch 9:46 train. (Please note trains are running early due to the National being on)

Ramblers: 8 miles in Douglas Valley. Meet at Baptist church car park to leave at 9:45. Appropriate footwear for both walks.

Local History

Tuesday 2^nd April 2pm to 4 pm Mr Stuart Harrison will give a talk on Moss Side Hospital and the war hospital using slides. The group meet at Lydiate Village Hall

‘Serving the Nation’ – This book was written by our member Cliff Duncan and relates Cliffs’ experience of National Service during the 1950s in England, Libya and Sudan. A copy of the book can be downloaded from the internet or a hard copy can be borrowed from Cliff (please see Cliff at coffee morning).

Strategies for SUDOKU, KAKURO and other fiendish puzzles.

We take a light-hearted look at all the fun stuff they never told you at school!

We meet at Kensington House, Station Road, from 2.30 to 4.30

No stress. Lots of laughs.

We had a very enjoyable afternoon today discovering links between Newcastle and Valencia, Madrid and New York, Tokyo and Adelaide, and Montevideo and Cape Town.

Our voyage around Latitude and Longitude revived some long forgotten facts about circles and angles, and having tackled time zones and the International Date Line, we think we now all know our place in the world.

We welcomed some new members, and started with warm-up ice-breakers such as:
A family gathering had a mother, father, daughter, son, aunt, uncle, nephew, niece, brother, sister and cousin. If there were only 4 people there, who were they?

If you can’t work it out, ask one of the maths group or come along and join us next time, Wednesday 3rd April at Kensington House at 2.30 when we will be looking at Strategies for Sudoku, Kakuro and other fiendish puzzles.

LATITUDE & LONGITUDE 

We will be going round in circles exploring the history, the problems, the inventions and the solutions that we now take for granted when we travel far afield.

Last month we had a hilarious time looking at maths in the house and dealing with wallpaper, tiles, curtains, carpets and kitchen units.

We always have a good laugh so why not join us? Calculators welcome.

FUNDRAISING UPDATE

Members of our U3A have now generously donated £616 to sponsor Maria Mullin, who will be running in the London Marathon in April to raise funds for Dementia Revolution, a joint campaign between Alzheimer’s Society and Alzheimer’s Research to fund new medical research. This is the main charity of the London Marathon this year.

She will be running in memory of her grandad George Krzysztanowski who was an active member of our U3A for many years before he developed Alzheimers disease and died.

So far, members’ support for this very worthy cause has been fantastic, and Maria is now well on her way to reaching her pledged target of raising £2,000.

Here is a scam I’ve not come across before  –

I had a message on my voice mail today that said

Hello, you called my phone earlier and I’m just wondering who you are. Please call me back.

I nearly did, until I remembered that I hadn’t made any outgoing calls today. I googled the number and, guess what, it was a listed scam.

Please be aware and be careful.
