Ramble to Moel Famau
15 members of the Ramblers group had a good walk today to the top of Moel Famu in North Wales. It was great to have 2 new U3A members join us on the walk. Although the distance covered was only just under 4 miles, the inclines were severe in places and certainly raised the heart rate. The weather was fine, if somewhat blowy, particularly at the top of the mountain. Descending via a different scenic route back to the car park we were afforded some tremendous views over the valley towards Liverpool and beyond. It was great to go up on such a clear day as the mountain is often shrouded in mist. Following the walk we regrouped at the Druids Inn for a lovely late lunch and some welcome drinks. Thanks to Ralph for the recce and leading the walk. Our next ramble will be to Great Budworth in Cheshire and will be on Thursday 3rd October.
Nordic walking Old Roan to Maghull
As a change from battling through overgrown fields, the group used the canal towpath tonight to walk from Old Roan to Maghull. Setting a steady pace led by one of our five new Nordic walking leaders, we completed the walk in a little over an hour and a quarter. Even though we are still in summer the breeze was keen at times, but was helpful to cool everyone down, however we could have done without the massive downpour just as we were nearing the end of the walk! Hopefully the weather will be kinder next week.
Nordic summer soiree
The Nordic walkers, both the morning and evening groups, met tonight for a summer gathering. After the torrential rain at the weekend, we were blessed with a balmy summer evening so were able to congregate in Brenda’s lovely garden. Following a short walk everyone settled down to an evening of lovely food, plenty of drinks and free flowing, often hilarious conversation. Safe to say it was a lovely evening enjoyed by all. Thanks to Brenda and John for hosting
July Ramble….or was it a scramble??
7 members of the rambling group set out today to tackle a hike around the Dove Stone reservoir area on Saddleworth Moor, which lies at the Northwest corner of the Peak District. Starting at a height of 210m we walked up a well made path winding around side of the hills in lovely sunshine. However the moors of the Peak District soon showed their true colours and the mist rolled in and a fine drizzly rain started to fall, which caused an impromptu stop to don wet gear….which…as can be seen from some of the photos …was of the slightly more unorthodox variety in some cases! Pedal Pushers on the Wirral again!
Taking advantage of the good weather, and the slightly less packed trains before the schools break up, the Pedal Pushers had another Wirral ride today. Catching the train to Brunswick we cycled back to the pier head to catch the ferry to Seacombe. Once here we had a great ride along clear cycleways as far as New Brighton. Some of the group turned back here, and cycled back to the ferry, via Wetherspoons where they had lunch ( which we only found out later) whilst the other 3 of us decided to continue as far as West Kirby. For some reason the cycleways on the Wirral are not as clearly marked as in Sefton, and we got rather lost, but at least we weren’t as unfortunate as the car that had driven onto the beach and got well and truly stuck! Hopefully the Coastguard got to it before the tide came in.

Once a year the Monday evening Nordic walkers undertake a longer walk utilising the bus service to get to a distant start point and walk back to Lydiate. Having been cancelled on several occasions due to the wet weather, the walk was planned for tonight. Continue reading
Foodie Group take to the water
Twelve members of the Foodie Group enjoyed a lunchtime treat today on the restaurant cruiser from the Mill Hotel and Spa Chester. Our starters were served as we sailed away from the hotel on the Shropshire Union Canal towards Northgate Lock. Having returned briefly to the hotel, the main course was served as we continued on the canal towards Hoole Lane lock, followed by a choice of delectable desserts, mostly highly calorific but extremely tasty! With wine to help the meal along, we enjoyed a pleasant afternoon, with good company and conversation before returning to the hotel where our canal voyage ended. Another successful gastronomic venture for the group, with a picnic to follow next month to round off the academic year.
Easy Walk – July postponed until 11th !
Due to the persistent poor weather, the route planned to be walked on 4th July has been found to be inaccessible. The leaders will recce another route but to allow time for this, the walk will be postponed for one week until 11th July. As soon as details are available they will be announced.
July Ramble: Change of date
In order to facilitate a trip by the Architecture for Fun group, the July ramble to Dovestones will now take place on 11th July rather than the 4th. Further details will be posted in due course. The Easy Walk will still take place on 4th July.
