Pack of cards

Have you recently bought a greeting card and been horrified at the cost? Or looking for an extra special one and not been able to find it? Why not make your own? New members are welcome at the card making group. We meet on Monday (except bank holidays) from 1:30-3:30 at the United Reform Church, Maghull. No experience is necessary. Group members are more than happy to share their expertise. For more information see Joan or Val at the coffee morning.

Countryside Walk

24 people took part in the monthly walk today. Leaving from Ormskirk Station the long walk group followed the route of the War Horses travelling though Ormskirk out to Lathom Chapel where over 120,000 horses and mules were trained for use at the front in WW1. The chapel today is still a functioning place of worship and is surrounded by traditional alms houses which can be rented for the princely sum of £125 per month, although the criteria for rental is very specific and hard to achieve.

Walking Group March 2nd

walking

Thursday 2nd March, leaving from Maghull Station at 9:30 to Sandhills and onward to Formby or Freshfield depending on your choice of walk. Both will return to the Railway Pub at Formby.

The long walk will be approx. 8.5 miles and will start at Freshfield station.

The shorter walk will be about 5 miles and will start at Formby station.

Please note both walks will go through the nature reserve at Formby point. At the moment the reserve is partially closed due to the aftermath of storm Doris. Some trees are unsafe. We will not walk through heavily wooded areas but all walkers undertake the walk at their own risk and will be required to sign the waiver form prior to the walk. Footwear appropriate for sand and muddy paths is essential.

February Walk

walkingThursday 2nd February. Please meet at Windmill Pub, Parbold for a 10:30 start.

2 walks available, 4-5 miles or 8-9 miles. Both include rough terrain and stiles so good walking footwear is essential. Those taking the short walk can have lunch at the pub after the walk. Unfortunately the kitchen closes at 2pm so those taking the longer walk will need to bring a packed lunch.

Cold and crispy walk to kick off 2017 season.

image

The first walk of the 2017 season took place this morning. 23 walkers and 2 dogs set out on a cold crispy morning to walk the Lydiate loop. 12 walkers opted for the longer route (approx 7 miles) led by Alan Carr, who walked from Lydiate to Maghull along the `Cheshire lines footpath, circling back to the canal at Melling, and continuing the loop back to our starting point. The remaining 11 ( and the 2 dogs) opted for the slightly shorter 5 mile route led by Judith Jones, taking the same route but missing out the loop to Melling.  Continue reading

Annual Carol Concert

concert-2

The Annual U3A Carol concert was held yesterday in the Sanctuary. The concert was well attended with a near capacity audience, who were entertained by the local community choir Singing our Socks Off (SoSo) led by musical director Su Grainger. With a mix of Christmas carols and songs, interspersed with readings and poems, the event provided a cheerful finale for the U3A year, topped off with refreshments once again delivered by the group of ladies who keep us hydrated at meetings throughout the year. Admission proceeds and a retiring “bucket” collection, will be donated to Woodlands Hospice.
