Foodie Group: It’s all Greek to me!

The foodie group met today for our usual monthly meeting and this month had the opportunity to sample Greek cuisine courtesy of Gwen, Mavis and Dot.

We tasted Kleftico, a traditional slow cooked lamb dish, feta salad, olives, baked aubergine and tomato, spiced potato wedges, tzatikii, wild rice salad, followed by desserts of fresh fruit crepes with chocolate spread, baklava, and a delicious chocolate coated almond and nougat slice, nicely washed down with a glass of ouzo.  Judging by all the empty plates the Greek food was enjoyed by all.

The foodie group meet on the third Thursday of every month and is open to new members.

Pedal Pushers visit the Lavender Farm

BEC996F9-CDA0-4E36-B69C-9415D46C8EE44 of the Pedal Pushers, plus one Easy Rider, met this morning at Moss Lane and cycled to the Lavender Farm just off the Rainford Bypass. Ably led by Bill Ashton, our intrepid leader, we cycled the 15 mile round trip using mainly quiet roads, but not without an encounter with several lorries and a couple of tractors intent on last minute hay making. The day turned out to be lovely and sunny and surprisingly hot, so we were glad of the refreshment stop to recharge our batteries, if not rest our legs. The fields at the farm had mostly been cut, but if you closed your eyes and felt the lovely sunshine, the smell of lavender in the air could trick you into thinking you were in Provence. Pity we had to open them again and see the Rainford Bypass! Another great ride. Thanks Bill!

Foodie Group take to the canal

12 members of the Foodie group took to the Leeds Liverpool Canal this evening for a 3 hour cruise aboard the Pride of Sefton.  Safe in the hands of our illustrious skippers we cruised from the mooring at Haskayne, northward to Scarisbrick Marina, then turned around and sailed back to the turning point just before Lydiate, before returning to our starting point. We were rewarded with clear blue skies and lovely sunlight , and enjoyed a very pleasant summer evening with good food, plenty of oesophageal lubrication and great company.

The foodie group is open to new members so if you would like to join us and engage in relaxing activities such as this, check out the details here

A day of style or should I say stiles???

17 members of the walking group set out today for Parbold. 5 members completed a short walk taking in the canal and local footpaths, and from the feedback at lunch had a very pleasant walk. Thanks Kath for leading this. The remaining 12 set out from the Fairy Glen for a walk, just under 7 miles, negotiating muddy paths, fields of wheat and barley, herds of cows, the odd sheep or two, a hazardous walk of a mossy plank over a stream and 25, yes, 25 stiles!

In the lovely summer sunshine the Pedal Pushers today set out to ride along the Cheshire Lines towards Formby, cut across to the Bypass and cycle back to Maghull via Lunt and Sefton Village. Little did we know that the anticipated ride was going to be set with problems.  First issue was a  was a mud guard which slipped and had to be removed and hidden in the bushes for retrieval later!

Walking Group – Moel Famau

The next walk will take place on Thursday 6th July and will be a circular walk from Cilcain ascending Moel Famau and returning to the start point. The hill ( not big enough to be called a mountain) is highest one within the Clwydian range. moel ffamau
The walk will be approx. 8 miles long and is described as “hard” on most websites, taking well defined paths and forestry tracks. Because of the terrain good footwear is required and walking poles might useful for the descent. As transport will be by private cars, if you intend to go on this walk, please meet at the Baptist church car park no later than 9:30am on 6th July and we will organise car-share. Donations towards fuel to each driver please. Please bring a change of footwear to prevent muddying cars. Packed lunch and waterproofs also essential. Phil has organised tea and cake with a local shop for the end of the walk!

Please contact Margaret Kendall if any further information required. (526 3164)

Which witch is which?

The walking group met yesterday in the village of Barley, Lancashire, set at the foot of Pendle Hill, an area renowned for the history of the “trials” of the Pendle Witches some 400 years ago.  During an era of religious persecution and suspicion they were the convenient scapegoats of the day. One group stayed down in the valley and took a route around Black Moss Reservoirs and the Pendle Sculpture Trail, which has ten ceramic plaques representing each of the Pendle people who were hanged. The other group took to the hills, and took the steady climb through beautiful heathland, to the summit of the hill which is 1827 ft. (557 metres) above sea level.
