Foodie Group take to the water

Twelve members of the Foodie Group enjoyed a lunchtime treat today on the restaurant cruiser from the Mill Hotel and Spa Chester. Our starters were served as we sailed away from the hotel on the Shropshire Union Canal towards Northgate Lock. Having returned briefly to the hotel, the main course was served as we continued on the canal towards Hoole Lane lock,  followed by a choice of delectable desserts, mostly highly calorific but extremely tasty! With wine to help the meal along, we enjoyed a pleasant afternoon, with good company and  conversation before returning to the hotel where our canal voyage ended. Another successful gastronomic venture for the group, with a picnic to follow next month to round off the academic year.

Foodie Group Regional bakes

The foodie group met yesterday and 3 of our members presented regional bakes. Jill  (who sadly could not join us but sent the most amazing bake) made a Shropshire Fidget Pie. In spite of extensive research, the history of this pie is unknown, but it is a genuine regional bake but with no provenance. It is thought it might have evolved in the same way as Cornish Pasties and Bedfordshire Clangers….filling pastry with meat and vegetables to use leftovers. Whatever its origins it was delicious! Ramble: Beamers trail

14 of us set off this morning from the Butlers Arms in Pleasington, a picturesque village on the outskirts of Blackburn, to walk the 6 miles of the Beamers Trail, part of the 32 mile walk known as the Witton Weavers Way. Pleasington was the manorial home of families such as the Ainsworths and Butler-Bowdens and still has a row of handloom weavers cottages  within the village. We joined the path at Pleasington Priory, which is a fine example of a Gothic Roman Catholic Church. Continue reading

Ramble through the Douglas Valley

12 members of the Ramblers group set off from the top of Parbold Hill to undertake an 8 mile walk through the picturesque Douglas Valley. Although we are now in Spring, the day was very cold, which necessitated the walkers being well wrapped up with hats scarves and gloves as well as the usual walking gear. Peter and Ann had undertaken a recce of the walk last week and found the tracks to be clear and easy to negotiate. Today however, following the recent heavy rains, the paths were very muddy and there were a couple of near misses which thankfully did not result in anyone falling in the streams!  Continue reading

Law for Fun: 1st successful meeting of this new group

The first meeting of this new group took place this afternoon. A relatively new member of our U3A stepped up and took on the mantle of a new group. Thank you John for doing this! 52 people attended, which I think is a record for a new group. We were introduced to some of the 59 articles enshrined in law by the European Convention of Human rights, as well as hearing about the unconventional route John had taken to become a Barrister. The talk was lively and informative and was appreciated by the audience. The group will continue to be held in the afternoon of the 3rd Thursday each month. If you wish to continue to attend, or were unable to make this group but wish to join, please see Brenda McKenzie on the group support desk at the coffee morning.
