German group

This is a fairly new group which welcomes new members. Led by Peter Duffy, they meet at St Georges Social Club on Thursdays at 10.00 am. Contact Peter if you would like to learn or brush up on this language. Ed.

 

 

Graduation Day – Beginners’ Bridge

Things finally began to make sense for the intrepid souls who have undertaken the beginners’ bridge course with the U3A. All the note taking, the point counting, the mystery of the losing trick count, the memorising of bids and the agonising over transfer bids or weak take outs made sense today as the group took part in a Duplicate Tournament at St Giles’ Church Hall, Aintree.

With home made cakes, quiches, prawns, salads and tasty baguettes the buffet table groaned under the weight of delicacy upon delicacy. Foodie Group know what makes a successful picnic

The foodie group certainly know how to do a picnic, their latest effort on 3rd August comprised:

  • Lasagne
  • Salmon
  • Cold Meats
  • BBQ ribs
  • Quiche
  • Pizza
  • Home made bread
  • Salad
  • Veg and Dips and crisps
  • Scones and cream
  • Fruit Brulee
  • Trifle
  • Fun lollipop cakes with an added surprise
  • Cheese and biscuits
  • Pate
  • Strawberries dipped in chocolate
  • Lemon cake
  • Fresh fruit

Foodie Group attend Italian Cookery Class

Members of the Foodie Group attended an Italian Cookery Class at the Olive Press Preston owned by Paul Heathcote.  Heathcotes have been doing cookery classes and demonstrations for nearly 20 years.  The recipes covered were
  • Mushroom Arancini
  • Orzo Pasta
  • Plaice with creamed haricot blanc
  • Grilled polenta cake with Mozzarella and easy tomato sauce
  • Chocolate Almond and Orange cake
We were given three different  rosé wines to try
  • Mirabello, Pinot Grigio Rosé (very dry)
  • Ancora, Monferrato Chiaretto, Piemonte (dry)
  • Alasia, Brachetto D’Acqui (sweet)
We then had a three course meal.
Excellent day, the good news is that they do other themes for example Spanish, Lancashire. We are aiming to get 25 people together so we can get a good deal. and attended another cookery class.

What the foodie group is all about

Members of the Foodie Group consist of people interested in all aspects of food and, in particular, opening up areas we have never tackled ourselves.

Discussing    Planning   Preparing     Cooking     Eating      Assessing

The main focus is to have fun. Topics are chosen for each meeting and anyone with an expertise in the subject leads the session.  We have made spaghetti, bread, Chinese food, simnel cakes, chocolate designs, looked at regional food, food from other countries, fish recipes, and had BBQ’s.
