July & August Walks

On Thursday, 12th July the walk will start from The Hop Vine in Burscough (previously The Royal Coaching House). This walk will commence at 10.45 to allow time for people coming by bus.
The number 3A from Ormskirk bus station at 10.18 gets into Burscough at 10.36. The number 2A is an hourly service and the 9.48 from Ormskirk gets in at 10.02.
Car parking at the pub is limited but there is usually plenty of room in Tesco’s car park just across the road
The walk is about 5.75 miles and is very flat, going nearly to Martin Mere with a coffee stop en route and returning along the canal.
A highly recommended lunch will be available at The Hop Vine after the walk but if you are intending to eat it is essential that you give your name in to the walking desk. The pub is very popular and reservations are required.

On Thursday, 9th August there will be a coach trip to Grassington for a moderate walk of about 7 miles from Cracoe to Thorpe, Burnsall and on into Grassington. An alternative (shorter) walk will proceed from Thorpe to Linton and on into Grassington. The coach price will be advised later but if you wish to go please give your name and a ?5.00 deposit to the walking desk.

On Thursday, 13th September we propose to have a walk from Bromborough to Neston – full details will be announced at a later date.

Liverpool’s Children in the 1950s

Two years ago Pam Russell, an enthusiastic member of our Local History Group and president of the Maghull & Lydiate Local History Society,  appealed to u3A members for help with a new book she was working on Liverpool’s Children in the 1950s. The book has now been published and is available in all good bookshops and on Amazon, including a Kindle edition. Continue reading

French Group Exhibition

Many, many thanks to everyone who contributed so colourfully to our “French Group of the Week” exhibition on May 8,  A wonderful way to celebrate VE day, a date that was totally ignored on our side of the Channel.   So many wonderful photos, cards, maps, brochures and pictures of famous French personalities.   Having some people in our group who actually own property in France is now a great advantage.  They bring us so much new local material.   I haven’t even mentioned the delicious nibbles!   So thank you all once again……..readers who are not yet members of any of our French groups, you may have noticed there was not a single sign displayed that said “Danger!” or “Non aux Anglais!”   Variety is the spice of Gallic  life.    As it is in the whole of our U3A.  So I can’t really say “Vive la différence!”

it over the last six years. Tony Snape, Chairman

Angus Tilston MBE

Angus Tilston MBE, LIverpool author, film maker and local historian who was  awarded the MBE for services to the Historical Film Industry in the North West was the  distinguished speaker at our meeting earlier this month when he entertained us with a fascinating  talk on aspects of Merseyside during the 20th Century. Many members with an interest in Liverpool history will probably have at least one of his DVD’s but there is much more information available in film and video archives which you can access below.

Sefton Older Persons Forum

Sefton Older Persons Forums (Maghull branch) would like U3A members to know about a meeting, held at St Andrews Church Hall on the last Tuesday afternoon each month. Members hear about current and future developments regarding health and wellbeing and  take part in future planning of local services. The meetings are free and refreshments are provided. If transport is needed to attend this can be arranged.
The next meeting will be held on Tuesday 27th March 1-30p.m. and the speakers will be Dawn Stewart, Age Concern Liverpool and Sefton, together with Karen Skelton from Sefton Plus.
