Welsh Group Christmas Lunch

We had a great lunch amid excellent company at the Alt before Christmas. Everyone was in fine spirits and although not all our members could attend we all had a very pleasant time.

Book Clubs

About our meetings

The Melling Lane group which meets normally every second Thursday evening at 19:30 is currently reading Sense of an Ending by Julian Barnes, a novella which won the 2011 Man Booker Prize. Bill Howarth recommended this as a good read and we will be meeting to discuss it together on Thursday 7th February.

Anne Carr’s group meets  on the second Friday  morning monthly at 10:30 and are currently reading The Thread  by Victoria Hislop and will meet to talk about this book on Friday 8th February 10:30am

Recommendations for books to read are always welcome, as are new members, though space is becoming a problem as we meet in leaders’ homes. We may need to think about  forming a third Reading Group. If you would be interested in starting or helping to lead a new group or would simply like to join one of the exisiting groups please contact David on 526 6001 or Anne on 526 2734.

Book Donations

On Tuesdays at our Coffee Morning 10-11:30 you can purchase a wide range of books donated by members for as little as 50p each or 3 for £1. Donations of books are very much appreciated to enable us to provide this service for members but the books should be in excellent or very good condition. David K.

Cook Club starts February

For all you foodies and home cooks out there this is your perfect monthly event.

The main focus of the club would be to share ideas, tips, stories, and observations or put another way, have conversations with others who like to eat.  .

Many of us buy recipe books with good intentions, but sadly they get put into a cupboard and never used.   Being part of a group could provide the support and encouragement needed to have a go at new recipes.

An idea could be if each one of us tried a new recipe each month and then report back to the group on the result.  We could each try a different recipe or do the same recipe. So a bit like the way a book club runs. The group can decide the way forward, we could try different approaches until we find the best one for the group.

The aim is that the meetings will be light hearted and fun and are open to amateurs and experts alike.  This is not a club to watch someone else do a demonstration this is all about getting involved and sharing with others.  So it is important you are willing to do this,

Because of the nature of the club initially the number of members will be kept to 10, this will ensure everyone from the group can be involved, if the group was any bigger this may be difficult.  We can meet at my house 57 Deyes Lane. The first meeting will be on 28th February 10.00 to 11.30, and then meet once a month.

If you are interested please contact me, Brenda McKenzie  on 531 0207.

BEM for U3A member

U3A member Nigel Winchester was recently awarded the British Empire Medal in the Queens Birthday Honours List for community services in Sefton. Nigel, the inspirational chairman and  leader of the Maghull Station Station volunteers who have transformed our local railway station, received his medal from the Lord Lieutenant of Merseyside, Dame Lorna Muirhead, representing the Queen,  at a special ceremony held recently at the Athenaeum Club in Liverpool. This prestigous award was recently revived by the prime Minister for the Queens Diamond Jubilee. Well done, Nigel.
