Family History Group

Due to polling this group will not be able to meet on the 4th May, so the next meeting will be on the 11th May at 2:00 pm at Lydiate Village Centre. Our speaker will be Kate Hurst who has been to our group on a previous occasion and whose talk then met with great enthusiasm by the group.

On the 11th her talk is entitled ‘Gamekeepers and Innkeepers’ and is a story of the gamekeepers and innkeepers in Kate’s family, who travelled from Suffolk to Nottinghamshire (via Essex, Yorkshire, North Wales and Lincolnshire) between 1800 and 1930.  Her talk will consist anecdotes of not only how her ancestors lived but how their employers lived as well. It promises to be an informative tale of ‘how the other half lived’ and more.

Tuesday Notices 4th April 2023

The coach for the Dorothy Clive Garden trip will be leaving the Square at 09:00 tomorrow, members are asked to assemble at 08:45.

History for Fun will be holding a talk on ‘Rock and Roll’ at Kensington House on the 21st of April at 14:30.  There will be live music supporting the talk.

AGM – 16th of May 2023

Our Annual General Meeting will be held at 10:00 at the Maghull Baptist Church, Hall Lane on the 16th of May 2023.  All  members are invited to attend and we are really hoping that we can match or even top the great attendance figure of last year!!  Please ensure you bring your current membership card with you as this will be needed to gain entry.

Sadly, we did not receive any nominations for new Committee Members which means that the responsibility for the u3a will remain with the current Committee.  We had hoped to bring new blood to our team this year and it causes a degree of worry as regards the future of our u3a.  In two years time (and it’ll soon fly) nine members of our Committee will have to take a year’s break leaving us with a non functioning Committee unless new members come forward.  We were in a precarious position in February 2022 and I would hate to find us in a similar position again.  Please think about what you can do to help secure our u3a’s future; you can join the Committee at any time during the year. No need to wait for the next AGM!  We really need you.

Exquisite bags of Easter Delights

The Card making class have just made these delightful bags and boxes which they filled with delicious mini Easter Eggs. Not only did the making of the little boxes bring pleasure but we’re certain the contents will give much joy to the inhabitants of Damfield Nursing Home when they receive their gifts tomorrow.

Well done to the Card Making group for their hard work and kind gesture.

Renewals Update

Our renewals programme is going well with over half of our members already having renewed.  We are hoping that all members will have renewed by the 31st of March as their current membership will no longer be valid from that date and they will not have the protection of the Third Age insurance policy.

I’d like to thank all the members who have given their time to helping out with renewals during the past few weeks, without you we could not have done so well. From the table setters, the scribes, the counters, the Treasury team and the tea ladies, who kept us supplied with coffee in an initially cold Sanctuary, to you the members who came and showed us your commitment to our u3a;  together we made a great team.

Join us on our six day break to Dorset this coming September.  We will be staying at the Riviera Hotel on the front at Bournemouth on a half board basis.  Our break will include a homage to Thomas Hardy as a local guide takes us around the places that Thomas set his wonderful novels.  We will sail along the Jurassic coast casting envious looks at the houses of the rich on Sandbanks and say hi to Brownsea Island and Old Harry’s Rocks as we make our way to Poole Harbour.
