Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II

To all our u3a members

It was with great sadness that we heard of the death of our dear Queen, Elizabeth II. For most of us she has been the steadying influence that has guided us during our lifetime and she and her warm smile will be sorely missed.

As a u3a we wish to convey our sincere condolences to the Royal Family at this very sad time.

During the week leading up to Her Majesty’s Funeral many of our groups may feel that they wish to cancel any meetings they had planned.  I believe that Group Leaders and their members should take this decision on an individual basis but that all u3a activities will be stopped on the 19th of September as a mark of respect.

Accordingly this week’s u3a coffee morning will go ahead allowing members who would like to meet up, a chance to share their thoughts and recollections of the Queen’s long and happy reign.

God Bless You Ma’am

And The Good News Is ..

Firstly I would like to thank all those members who turned up for our AGM on the 17th of May.  It was brilliant to see so many of you there; in fact you beat the record for attendance at an AGM by miles.  207+ of you came and that support meant so much.

Secondly, even better news is that we now have a Treasurer!  Christine Dalziel has agreed to stand as our Treasurer and although we were too late to vote her in at the AGM we have accepted her onto the Committee using a casual vacancy clause.  Chris will need to be voted in properly at our next AGM.

Chris has been a member of the u3a for a couple of years and has a good background in finance as she has been the Treasurer for Maghull WI for a few years.  As you can imagine, once she said yes we made sure to hang on very tightly to her.

On behalf of myself, the Committee and all the members I would like to send our thanks to Chris and wish her all the best in the role.

Beginners’ Bridge Group

Beginners’ Bridge is moving house – we will now be based at Kensington House, Station Road, Maghull.  Our session starts at 13:00 and goes on till 15:00.

We will be starting a new beginners’ group whilst still continuing to support our Improvers on the 6th of September.  Here’s your chance to learn the game that kept so many people sane during the lockdowns.  Get in touch with Jane on 0151 526 2530 if you are interested in joining us.

Bodmin Jail Hotel – June 2021

A 4/5 star hotel, a dining room built inside a chapel, Michaelangelo’s fresco on the ceiling, lights that changed in tune to the heavenly music and Cordon Bleu cooking.  You’d be expecting the dress code to be black tie and long frocks for the ladies – but no.
For this intrepid couple it meant putting on your pyjamas and turning up in barefeet!

Frances and Ken are on a mission and they turned up in their signature Alderhey pyjamas! Their aim is to raise awareness for the work Alderhey hospital is doing and they have been turning up in their pyjamas at various venues.
There were no disapproving looks from the rest of the guests though, just an interest in what it was all about.  Guess that means they fulfilled their aim – mission accomplished!
I wonder where they’ll turn up next?!

Lockdown Leads to Poetry

The following poem was written by one of our members, I’m sure the sentiment will strike a chord with many of us!!

Decisions! Decisions!

Sitting here deciding and thinking what to do

It really is quite wearing makes me feel quite blue

I should clear out that cupboard throw out all the tat

But I might need it one day so that’s the end of that

Executive decisions they are running through my mind

Should I clean the paintwork or something of that kind?

It’s made me tired thinking of the jobs ahead of me

I’ll have to sit and have a rest and make a cup of tea

You’d think it would be easy to have the time you need

But all I really want to do is sit down and have a read

I feel a little guilty when friends say what they’ve done

But that guilt it soon wears off when I’m sitting in the sun

I get out all the tools to make a garden of perfection

Then it seems that I have lost all sense of my direction

I’m right back in the kitchen now how did I get here

The teapots on the table and I’ll have a cup to cheer

The nasty time is over and things have not been done

Do I regret time wasted when I didn’t even manage one?

I’ve got a lovely sun tan, have read favourite books galore

And the jobs they still awaiting just as they were before

2020 Holidays Update

Due to the current crisis all my holidays for 2020 have been either deferred to 2021 or cancelled.  Here is an update

Derbyshire Weekend – this holiday has been moved to 26th March 2021.  As this date was not feasible for everyone i now have rooms available on this break. Click on this link to view the flyer.

Battlefields Tour – this holiday has been moved to 5th of September 2021 and amazingly has remained at almost the same cost.  Once again the new date has clashed with other events for a few people so places are now available on this break.  Click on this link to view the flyer.

If you have an interest in either or both of these breaks please contact Jane Jones on 0151 526 2530
