Passhendaele and the Somme

“Lest  We  Forget”

After a hot sultry day the cooling evening breeze gave relief as we walked through Ypres towards the Menin gate.  The magnificent Cloth Hall towered above the busy square where people laughed, joked and enjoyed their evening meals in the cafes and bars of the city.
The glorious cathedral stood proudly, dominating the city; it looked as though it had always been there but just over 100 years ago the impressive city had been reduced to rubble.

North – East England Holiday

The ‘Kynren’

Recently we took a holiday to the North-East of England, a land of castles and cathedrals; myths and legends.   It was a holiday that turned out to be memorable for many reasons.   First we were practically drowned at Housteads Roman Fort when the heavens decided to fill the reservoirs of the North in one morning;.  Wet through took on a different meaning when it really did mean getting your vest soaked!!  Secondly, two people went down with Covid so that masks and sanitisers came back into our lives.  Our precautions didn’t give us much defence though as twelve people succumbed in total!!

Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II

To all our u3a members

It was with great sadness that we heard of the death of our dear Queen, Elizabeth II. For most of us she has been the steadying influence that has guided us during our lifetime and she and her warm smile will be sorely missed.

As a u3a we wish to convey our sincere condolences to the Royal Family at this very sad time.

During the week leading up to Her Majesty’s Funeral many of our groups may feel that they wish to cancel any meetings they had planned.  I believe that Group Leaders and their members should take this decision on an individual basis but that all u3a activities will be stopped on the 19th of September as a mark of respect.

Accordingly this week’s u3a coffee morning will go ahead allowing members who would like to meet up, a chance to share their thoughts and recollections of the Queen’s long and happy reign.

God Bless You Ma’am

God Save the King

And The Good News Is ..

Firstly I would like to thank all those members who turned up for our AGM on the 17th of May.  It was brilliant to see so many of you there; in fact you beat the record for attendance at an AGM by miles.  207+ of you came and that support meant so much.

Secondly, even better news is that we now have a Treasurer!  Christine Dalziel has agreed to stand as our Treasurer and although we were too late to vote her in at the AGM we have accepted her onto the Committee using a casual vacancy clause.  Chris will need to be voted in properly at our next AGM.

Chris has been a member of the u3a for a couple of years and has a good background in finance as she has been the Treasurer for Maghull WI for a few years.  As you can imagine, once she said yes we made sure to hang on very tightly to her.

On behalf of myself, the Committee and all the members I would like to send our thanks to Chris and wish her all the best in the role.
