PRACTICAL GARDENING

We discussed what our gardens looked like after the recent bad weather.  One of our members had taken photos of her gardens to show how bare it looks at the moment.  She will do this every month so we can see the changes.

One of the group who is very successful with pots shared what are her favourite plants for pots are:

Pot 1- Put a cordaline in the middle, and put scarlet geraniums and deep blue lobelia around it.Pot 2. Pot full of deep blue headbourne lilies  These plants do not like to be moved they like to be pot bound. Pot 3. Argyranthemum Molimba rose which is a gorgeous plant which flowers until the frost. Edged with petunias. Wheelbarrow -Scarlet geraniums, Purple nemesis, pink and white verbena, pink dassia, trailing ivy, trailing dark blue lobelia. Nita also suggests using blue pots to add to the impact. A Walk in Sunny Southport

14 Sunday Strollers enjoyed an easy walk around the lake in Southport.

The weather for this time of the year was great and from all accounts everyone enjoyed the fish and chips at the end of the walk.  The next walk will be from Moreton to New Brighton – a flat 5 miles which can be extended to 7 miles by carrying on to the ferry station at Seacombe if you wish.  Otherwise you can catch the train or bus back to Liverpool. We will be getting the 10 o clock train from Maghull and will be in Moreton just before 11 to start our walk.  There are plenty of eating places in New Brighton so you can take your pick.   If you want more details come to Group Support desk on a Tuesday morning or ring 531 0207 and speak to John

French Language Group

We would love to welcome a few more members to our Monday French language group which meets at 2.00 p.m. at St. George’s Social Centre.   Originally we had required potential members to have obtained a French A level in the past but we no longer insist on that.   Anyone who had a good “O” level standard (GCSE today) and who is willing to participate in explaining their recent activities would be welcome and would feel at home.  They would also need to be interested in contemporary issues to debate in French.   Recent examples of that include the shortage of butter in France last autumn, the status of  nurses and a comparison of their role with their opposite numbers here in Britain, the role of wind farms.   One of our members Peter Duffy presents fascinating news item from the French- speaking world on the computer screen with accompanying texts and exercises for fun.   Informal atmosphere each week. -David Ward

MODERN FRANCE

The Modern France group this year are going to look at doing a course on Anglo-French relations across the centuries, which has meant going all the way back to the Hundred Years’ War, when in French eyes England was the natural hereditary enemy (devastation of the French landscape,  burning of Joan of Arc, the  humiliation of the French monarchy as Henry V accompanied by his young French bride and the defeated French king walked hand in hand to Henry’s majestic coronation as the official King of France! )

Poetry Reading Group

The Poetry Reading Group meet on the second Wednesday in every month 10.30-12.30. They have eleven members and the meetings are very informal and friendly.  Each month the group decides the subject for the next month, whether it be a particular poet or subject and then go away and either with the help of the internet or their own poetry books choose a poem which they will read out to the group at the next meeting.

Much discussion follows and it is surprising where the discussion goes!!!!
