Eight Ramblers met today to travel to Wycoller Country Park near Colne.
The walk started from the ample (free) Visitor Car Park some 500 yards from the village of Wycoller. We were joined here be Hazel, a lady who lives in the area and a friend of Hilary one of our group members. Hazel proved to be a strong walker and we roped her in as group photographer from time to time.
Entering the village of Wycoller is like going back in time. There were beautiful stone houses and converted cottages that provided a lovely setting for the impressive ruins of Wycoller Hall believed to be the Ferndean Hall in Jane Eyre. We marvelled at the rustic beauty of the Pack Horse Bridge and the massive single stone slab of the Clapper Bridge.
After hearing some ghostly tales connected with the hall we started the walk proper with a stiff ascent to an artistic installation, The Atom, which sits on the hill above the village and provides a spectacular viewpoint for the surrounding landscape. Coming down from  The Atom we reached the Clam Bridge across the beck. This is another huge stone slab said to be 1000 years old! One can only marvel as to how it was ever placed there.
Our walk took us uphill on to open moorland as we followed parts of the Pendle Bridleway and Brontë Trail where we made our lunch stop blessed with sunny weather and a warm breeze. None of us were in a hurry to resume the walk!
After lunch we headed downhill through fields of new born lambs who we sent scurrying for their mothers as we passed by . We were soon entering the outskirts of Trawden village with its historic connections to cotton milling evident in the converted mill workers cottages and mill buildings. Trawden is another very attractive village and at Rock Cafe the sign for Ice Cream was too much to resist. We sat in the sunshine enjoying our ice creams and the cafe owner, realising we were such a photogenic group, asked if she could take our photo and we duly obliged!
One short, sharp climb took us to footpaths back to Wycoller where we arrived, surprisingly with clean, dry footwear!
