Who doesn’t like jumping about in muddy puddles? On today’s ramble, led by Alan, there was plenty of opportunity for just that!
The circular walk of nearly 7 miles from Orrell Waterpark to Billinge Hill (179m or 587ft) took place in bright dry weather and we made the beacon tower at the top of the hill in good time and along reasonably dry paths underfoot. What Billinge Hill lacks in height it makes up for with 360 degree views of the surrounding landscape.
After a short ‘banana break’ at the hill our walk continued and we squelched our way downwards. We passed ‘Billinge Pepperpots’ these four unusual, brick built towers dominate the landscape. They are actually air vents for the Lancashire-Yorkshire railway tunnel below our feet.
The persistent rain of late had one final challenge in store for us in the form of a deeply flooded path. As there was no alternative way of getting around this we just had to ‘go for it’ as best we could. Mercifully it came at the end of the walk and a change of footwear and a pub with a warm fire awaited.
The Holts Arms provided us with lovely lunches and a welcome drink (for those not on Dry January).
Overall a pleasant local ramble, enjoyed by all (or were they just being polite?)
