We are off to Derbyshire, specifically to Tissington one of the prettiest villages. Overlooked by Tissington Hall, a 17thc Jacobean Mansion, which is still a private home occupied by Sir Richard Fitzherbert and his family. Here are the first Well Dressings of the year and most consider them to be the best. To-day is Ascension Day and the blessing of the Wells will take place. Well Dressing is a beautiful pictorial floral art, made by local talented volunteers, using clay, petals, leaves, stones, twigs etc. The origins have disappeared in the mists of time but are thought to be connected with the Black Plague when the wells were dressed to protect the water. It’s a tradition only found in Derbyshire and the Staffordshire Peaks border. Time to wander and browse in this lovely peaceful village. There is a Craft Fair on in the village hall which is by the pond. You can have refreshments here or if you prefer wait till we reach Matlock Bath where there is a wide choice of eating/drinking places. Developed as one of the first tourist destinations it has attractive riverside gardens and plenty of things to see and do including the aquarium with its’ additional exhibitions, Museum of Photography etc. Nearby is the home of the Heights of Abraham, a cable car ride with attractions at the top. Please ask if you are interested.
