WAMOT – Two Sundays !

What a difference a day makes to the Sunday strollers group.  Last Sunday (23rd) it was wet and miserable. This Sunday it was blue, cloudless skies and a full house of 21 walkers, strolling in the sun. 2.3 miles from Maghull station, along the canal to Brewery Lane, a turn around Balls Wood and back to the station.  All topped off with breakfast and coffee.

Unlike last Sunday, where we started in Lydiate, walked up to Town Green and back under dark, gloomy skies and an almost constant drizzle.

The good news is that both occasions brought out hardy, hearty and interesting company to drive away the Covid blues.  Here are some images from both walks.

Have you signed up for the ‘1000 mile in September‘ challenge.  The idea is for our U3A  ‘Walk A Mile Or Two‘ walkers to aggregate there miles walked in September.  Can we get over the 1000 miles target together?  Contact Brenda McKenzie to add your miles.

A Coastal Canter

For Monday’s ride, 12 Day Riders (14 actually as 2 just missed the start) from M&L and O&A U3A’s met to ride the Coastal Route to Banks and then inland to Croston. It was good to welcome Ralph back into the fold following his summer training with Phil’s crew. We set off in glorious weather and picked up a nice tail wind as we made our way through Ainsdale. An added bonus was the current closure of part of the Coast Road to motor traffic. This gave us the chance to pick up speed to Southport. From Banks it was a sprint to our lunch stop at Sooty’s Garden Centre. Here the epicureans amongst us took full advantage of the half-price offer to carbo-load for our return journey through Croston and Ormskirk. All returned safely from this 48 mile ride. Next week meet at 1000hrs at The Derby Arms to ride to Ainsdale via Maghull.

Tackling the Trail!

Today 7 riders from M&L U3A and O & A U3A set off in drizzle rain to join the Trans-Pennine Trail. Due to the weather the trail was mostly devoid of other trail users so a swift pace was kept up to Halewood. The weather brightened up as we reached Hale and on into Widnes for a welcome brew at the Catalyst Museum. Cycling through Spike Island we picked up the T.P. Trail once more which took us to Fiddlers Ferry on the Warrington outskirts. Mike Miller led this section through the lovely trails along Sankey Valley emerging at Carr Mill Dam. An excellent ride of 57 miles, the majority of which was off road. Next weeks ride will be the coastal route to Banks and on towards Tarleton. Meet at 1000hrs at The Derby Arms.

Day Trips Update

Just before the lockdown commenced in March, three Day Trips had been booked for March, April and May.  Deposits, and in some cases the full amount, had been paid in. amounting to just under £3,000.  As there is no sign of us being able to return anytime soon I have arranged for these amounts to be returned to you.   By now you should all have received your refund but if you haven’t don’t worry it’s on its way. There were 92 cheques to be returned.  This brings me to saying a very big thank you to Stuart, our Treasurer, who had the unenviable task of writing them all out..By making the refund we will have a clean slate when we return.  Thank you to all who continue to show an interest in our trips and hopefully, you will continue to do so in the future. In the meantime, stay well, keep safe and let’s hope we will be back together  soon.  Kindest Regards  Marj

A Rolling Ride!

Today 10 riders from M&L and O&L U3As joined forces for our ride out to Chorley. This time the weather was kind as this particular ride was cancelled two weeks ago due to horrendous conditions. Leaving the relatively flat landscape of West Lancs we headed into some hilly country in the outskirts of Wigan before a lovely stretch of canal bank took us to our first cafe stop at Adlington. We carried on along the canal, passing Botany Bay and another welcome brew at Top Locks before turning for home via Chorley, Euxton, Mawdesley and Burscough. An excellent ride of 54 miles, expertly led by our good friend DAG.
