Rainford reconnoitre

The longer riders of  the Pedal Pushers group had a good ride today starting from Maghull, circuiting Rainford and returning home via Aughton, a distance of just under 25 miles. Riding via Spurriers lane we came across a council lorry collecting several mattresses which had been fly tipped in the lovely countryside. It beggars belief that people would do this!. Riding on we stopped at the recently re-named Cherry Orchard tea rooms ( formerly the Lavender Farm) where enjoyed a lovely coffee at one of the many outside benches. Suitably refreshed we continued via the bypass  towards golf driving range to access the Rainford Linear Cycle path to Rainford junction station. Using country lanes we cycled on through Bickerstaffe and Aughton, where the inevitable headwind made the going considerably harder! Circuiting through Aughton we returned to Maghull just under 3 hours since we left, having enjoyed a great ride through some lovely scenery.

We set off once again and rode into Childwall to pick up the Trans-Pennine Trail to Aintree. Heading into Maghull our ride took us along the Cheshire Lines path and back to our Lydiate start point. Five get wet in Upholland!

Six actually but the weather caused one of our U3A Day Riders to cut the ride short. We set off from The Derby Arms, led by Mike Miller, in fine drizzle which progressively got heavier. Reaching our brew stop at The Fir Tree Cafe in St Helens, and after sanitising and providing contact and trace details, we enjoyed a hot drink whilst our clothes dripped on the floor. We cut the ride short which was a popular move and made our return journey. Despite the weather we enjoyed an excellent ride of 33 miles.

Next Monday 20th of July we will meet at Lydiate Village Hall at 1000hrs to ride along the canal bank to the dock road. From there we cross the waterfront and on to Otterspool and into Sefton Park. We will return along the Trans-Pennine Trail and Cheshire Lines path to Lydiate.
