Sunny Sefton

Today’s U3A Day Riders set off from The Derby Arms for a ride to Ainsdale. We made our way via Lydiate to Maghull, passing The Nordic Walkers with a cheery wave, and down through Lunt and Thornton to reach Formby. Our usual watering hole, The Velo Cafe, was closed so our brew stop was at Formby Wetherspoons where we sat outside enjoying ‘unlimited’ coffee in the warm Spring sunshine. Soon we were off again and on to Ainsdale to ride back across the Moss to Halsall where we went our separate ways. A great ride of 35 miles in almost perfect conditions. Next week’s ride will be to West Kirby is cancelled.

Cycling to see Prince Of Wales

iAs ‘ The Prince of Wales’ was docked at the Liverpool Cruiser Terminal our group of 8 decided to incorporate a visit to see her as part of our ride on Monday March 2nd.  A most impressive sight. She is so large we could only get a small portion of Her in the picture.

The ride consisted of taking the train to Brunswick Station and cycling from there to the pier head and the Cruise Terminal, followed by the usual Cup of Tea.  A local Bobby was persuaded to take the photo for us.

we then cycled home via the Leeds Liverpool Canal.

Weather was good for the first time in weeks.

Hike to the Pike

After the early morning frost, the sun came out and we walked under a clear blue sky and no wind. We set off from Great House Barn and followed the tracks across Breres meadows. The leaders had chosen a lower route than the ascent to the pike, due to the volume of high winds we have recently had, which would have made the higher route dangerous. We were joined by another walker as we strolled through the woods who then gave us a very comprehensive history of the Castle, which is in fact a Folly, and was constructed as a ruin, and also the history of the reservoir. The land still belongs to the Leverhulme family, owners of Port Sunlight on the Wirral. Continue reading
