Breezy Billinge

Hi all.  Today, riders from Maghull & Lydiate U3A and Ormskirk and Aughton U3A had a breezy New Year ride to Billinge.  A few inclines got the cardiovascular systems going before our cafe stop at The Fir Tree. Thanks to Mike Miller for leading the ride.

Next week the ride is to West Kirby.  The train from Ormskirk leaves at 09.50hrs and 10.00hrs from Maghull.  Alight at Moorfields to catch the ferry.  The ride will continue from West Kirby along the Wirral Way to Hooton for the return train.
Hope you can make it.

Maths 4 Fun

Because of continuing family commitments I am unable to keep this group going. Thank you to members for all your support during the last three years. We have had a lot of laughs and I hope that some of you now have a more enjoyable experience of Maths. If anyone feels able to take over, please get in touch with me or any member of the group support team.

Finally, can I recommend some fantastic viewing – the Royal Institution Lectures this Christmas covered “The Secret Power of Maths” a great insight into the effects of Artificial Intelligence on our everyday lives. They were on BBC4 on 26th, 27th and 28th December and are now all on catch-up.

Thank you once again and Happy New Year

New Year – New Day Trip

Happy, Healthy New Year to all. Our new day trip will start  with coffee at Oswaldtwislte Mills.  This is an award winning outlet and a popular group destination.  There is just about everything you could wish for including fresh food counters and a Garden Centre. We can browse, even buy,  before having a delicious Lancashire lunch.  After lunch we will reboard our coach to be joined by Simon Entwistle to give us a guided Haunted Histories tour.  Simon is very well known for his entertaining tours and has done a series for BBC television.  He will keep us amused and informed with his tales of the unexpected.  So sit back, relax and enjoy.

When?  Wed.5th February 2020.  Depart 9.15am  Ret.5pm.  Price: £25 inc.morning coffee, lunch and guided tour.  Seats will be on sale at our table on Tues.7th January 2020

January Ramble: Ship to Ship

11 Ramblers completed the first walk of the New Year today. Setting off from the Ship Inn at Haskayne, we completed an 8 mile walk along the banks of the Leeds Liverpool Canal. In spite of the recent rain the towpath was passable with no dense muddy sections. The first part of the walk was quiet with no passing barges or fellow walkers on the canal bank. Our first prospective coffee stop at Scarisbrick Marina was aborted as it was closed! Our next attempt was equally fruitless as the next pub we got to was also still shut! However it was 3rd time lucky and we managed to find the Heaton’s Bridge open, much to the horror of the landlady, who clearly had not expected a group of 11 coming through the door as soon as she opened up.
