Ramble to Moel Famau

15 members of the Ramblers group had a good walk today to the top of Moel Famu in North Wales. It was great to have 2 new U3A members join us on the walk. Although the distance covered was only just under 4 miles, the inclines were severe in places and certainly raised the heart rate. The weather was fine, if somewhat blowy, particularly at the top of the mountain. Descending via a different scenic route back to the car park we were afforded some tremendous views over the valley towards Liverpool and beyond. It was great to go up on such a clear day as the mountain is often shrouded in mist. Following the walk we regrouped at the Druids Inn for a lovely late lunch and some welcome drinks. Thanks to Ralph for the recce and leading the walk. Our next ramble will be to Great Budworth in Cheshire and will be on Thursday 3rd October.

Day Trips – Christmas Lunch

We will start our day with a visit to the beautiful and award winning model village of Port Sunlight.  With over  30 Architects showcasing their designs – there is an intriguing range of styles. The concept was the idea of Lord William Lever, of Lever Brothers fame, for his workers to have good quality housing, and leisure facilities in their free time. The houses are highly sought after to-day.  It’s a lovely place to wander and attracts visitors from all over the world. There are fine open spaces, the Lady Lever Art Gallery (free) with all its’ treasures, a lovely cafe and shop and a family owned Garden Centre, which will be decorated in all its’ Christmas splendour and it also has a nice cafe. You can also visit the Museum and Garden Village (small charge) Then we are off to Llyndir Hall Hotel, Rossett, owned by the Hallmark Hotel Group, set in 5 acres of gardens on the North Wales Borders.  The Hotel has a reputation for good food, comfort and we will partake in a relaxed 3 course meal followed by tea/coffee/mince pies

WHEN??  Monday 16th December 2019.  Dep.9.30am  Ret.5pm Price: £27 inc.3 course lunch/tea/coffee/mince pie. (a deposit of £10 is requested on this trip please) Seats will be on sale at our table on Tues.10th September 2019

Real Ale Group-success story.

The Real Ale Group has steadily increased in members and last week started a waiting list.  The Group considered starting a second group but we would need to find a new leader to run this group and no one in the group was willing to do this.  However, this could be an option if one of our members would be willing to lead a second group.

The group decided to increase the times they meet and instead of meeting once a month they would meet twice a month.  The group then decided as many of the Real Ale events now include Gin Tasting they would have Real Ale on one of the meetings and Gin Tasting on the other.  The ladies on the waiting list were invited to join the Gin Tasting meeting which starts next month,  They have taken up the offer so the Group no longer has a waiting list.

We are always looking for new leaders if you think you could run a group come to the Group Support desk on a Tuesday morning or text Brenda McKenzie on 07900525222

Tea Party Ride

Today’s U3A Day Riders, together with friend from Ormskirk and Aughton U3A, set off from The Derby Arms to ride to Rainford where we were treated to an impromptu tea party in Peter Dow’s lovely garden. Once refreshed with tea, coffee and scones we set off once again. The ride took us up Billinge Hill and on into St. Helens. On the return journey our energy reserves were topped up at Lavender Farms Cafe. An excellent ride in excellent company.

Next Monday’s ride will be to Tarleton and Homeswood. Meet at 1000hrs, Ormskirk Railway Station.
