New Day Trip

We will begin our day by visiting the lovely, popular town of Llangollen which is full of interest and atmosphere.  Surrounded by hills, set on the River Dee and the Llangollen Canal running through  We will travel via the stunning Horseshoe Pass with its spectacular views.  Standing on the ancient bridge with the River Dee rushing below over the rocks, you get a good view of the town and the steam train. Visit the busy wharf with its’ tea rooms and get up close to the horses that pull some of the boats. There are plenty of cafes, inns, tea rooms and sandwich takeaways to choose from, where we can have coffee and some lunch with independent shops to browse. Then we will head for the world famous Pontycysyllte Aqueduct, which is a world heritage site. We will take a 2 hour boat trip along the Canal, through the Dee Valley and then cross the famous aqueduct designed by that clever, far seeing man Thomas Telford 213 years ago.  It’s nicknamed the River in the Sky and is the highest, longest, oldest canal aqueduct in the world.  It is 126 feet above ground and the canal flows through an iron trough.  Breathtaking views.  Our boat is named after him  There is a guide to tell us all and refreshments are available to purchase on board. Wine tasting at the Summer Solstice

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

40 U3A members took advantage of the longer hours of daylight this evening and attended a wine tasting evening hosted at Scatchards, where we sampled Chilean wines. Two whites, a rose and three reds were tasted, accompanied by chorizo, goats cheese, crackers and olives. The evening was a great success with lively conversation, not all about the wine, and it was great to see several new U3A members attending the evening. Thanks to George Birchall for arranging the evening and transportation to and from the event.

Foodie Group: Who ate all the pies?

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

The foodie group met today for our usual monthly meeting and sampled pies created by Dave, Brian, Ann and Lillian. Thank you all for your contributions. For savoury we tried corned beef and onion pie; and an unnamed creation that had no specific recipe but developed as it was being made! It might not have a name but it certainly went down well!  For desserts we had offerings of quick lime pie, Jamaican crunch pie  and cake in a mug. It can certainly be said no one goes home hungry from the meetings. After all the carbs we are sampling salads next month and finalising our plans for the summer picnic in August.

Nordic Walking

Several members took part in the free “Nordic walking” training which costs £70 per person to Sefton Council, but to date only one of these people have attended a Nordic walk. It is important to attend the walks to consolidate the learning and prevent waste of council monies.

The next morning walk takes place on Monday 25th at 10:15 from the Leisure centre for 1 hour, or Monday 25th at 6:30 from Lydiate Scout hut for 90 mins. No need to book , just turn up. Poles are available at each walk.
