Dathlu Dydd Gŵyl Dewi Saint David’s Day Celebration

Cawsom hwyl ddydd Iau diwethaf wrth i ni gasglu ynghyd i ddathlu Diwrnod Dewi Sant. Cawsom wledd wirioneddol gyda bwydydd traddodiadol Cymreig wedi’u golchi i lawr gyda photiau o de. Roedd ein bwydlen yn cynnwys bara brith, teisennau Cymreig, crempog,  a tart cenhinen a madarch a Rarebitt Cymru.
Fe wnaethon ni ddysgu am Dewi Sant a sut y daeth cenhinen yn arwyddlun Cymru. Wrth i ni ddod i ben, fe wnaethom ganu holl adnodau’r Anthem Genedlaethol.

We had fun last Thursday as we gathered together to celebrate Saintt David’s Day. We had a veritable feast with traditional Welsh foods washed down with pots of tea. Our menu consisted of bara brith, Welsh cakes, pancakes, leek and mushroom tarts and Welsh Rarebitt.
We learnt about Saint David and how the leek became the emblem of Wales. As a rousing finale we sang all the verses of the National Anthem.

EASY RIDERS UPDATE March 2nd 2018

In spite of the poor weather conditions we had six rides by mid February this year, starting on New Years Day.

Our second run was a short ride to Lydiate and Aughton with time for a quick change of outfits before meeting up at Miller and Carters to celebrate Ken Pool’s 80th Birthday. see photo.

Last year, first Beryl and then John Ramsden reached the same milestone and we had a similar celebratory lunch.   We do, also, have riders in their 50s, 60s and 70s in the group.

Beryl also set a new first by swapping her bike for a ‘Pedal Assist Electric Bike’. we saw the benefit on our ride back from Scarisbrick Marina, via Ormskirk. At the bottom of Holborn Hill Beryl switched to maximum power and shot off up the hill leaving the rest of us toiling up a long way behind. Continue reading

12 members of the walking group took on the challenge of “the beast from the East” and tackled a 7 mile walk from Maghull to Aughton today.Using the canal paths and byways, the first part of the walk was actually quite pleasant, walking alongside the Leeds Liverpool Canal, watching skating ducks and enjoying the brief glimpses of weak sunlight. Leaving the canal we headed across open farmland in Lydiate when the wind really started to blow. Continue reading

Practical Gardening

At our February meeting we started by sharing what we are enjoying flowering in the garden at the moment. Witch hazel, snowdrops, heathers (excellent in Kings Park Southport at the mo), daffodils , crocuses and all spring bulbs and hellebores were amongst those which have been at their best.

We  discussed how the geranium cuttings taken at the end of last year had fared. There had clearly been some successes with an important criteria being ensuring the cuttings were not kept too wet – we looked forward to seeing the end results in Summer.

We agreed we needed to try out the practice of starting cuttings such as fuschia in water first which has been found to be successful by many of the group. We will try Continue reading
