Foodie Group: Desserts for our delectation

The Foodie Group met again today and, as you can see from the slideshow, were treated to a veritable display of delectable delights which we demolished! Rounding off our 3 course menus the focus was on desserts and we certainly had a great time Thankfully, oops sorry, regrettably, quite a few usual members were missing, so those who attended had to were able to carry out the Oliver Twist tradition of ” please sir, can I have some more”! Thanks to everyone who served such a fine table of food.   Our focus next month is pasta dishes, which, hopefully, will be slightly less calorific !

NEW DAY TRIP

We will start our day with a visit to the Derwen Garden Centre, Welshpool, owned by the Joseph family.  One of the best Garden Centres with 15  individual garden  displays representing styles from the Orient to Italy, some with sculptures.  Plenty to see and do here.

There is a fully licensed Restaurant with a covered verandah and patio, an Organic, well stocked with local produce, Farm Shop and a lovely gift area.  Time to have a browse tea/coffee/cake, some lunch.  Then we are off to Lake Vyrnwy, a reservoir built in the l800’s to provide Liverpool with fresh water.  Set in a stunning location.  There is an amazing dam which is Grade 2 listed.  The area is a haven for wild life and birdwatching.See how many species you can spot.  There is a hide to view the birds up close, a shop owned by the RSPB to visit, which is responsible for topping up the bird feeders, some Craft outlets, the Artisan Cafe on site and also The Barn Cafe just a couple of minutes away with wonderful views. For the more energetic there is a sculpture trail close by. We will be joined on our coach by a Ranger who will guide us round this amazing lake with stops for interest and photographs.  The scenery here has been compared to the Swiss Alps.

WHEN? Wed.23rd May 2018.  Dep.8.30am  Ret.6pm  Price £19 inc.guided lake tour.  Seats will be on sale at our table on Tuesday 20th March 2018.

Pedal Pushers: Sunshine at last!

Following weeks of bad weather on a Wednesday, illness and holidays, the Pedal Pushers managed to get an almost complete group on the ride today. Using the Cheshire Lines cycle way we rode out from Maghull, did a circuit around the lanes and paths of Lydiate and Aughton before a coffee stop at Hartleys, Then following the cycle lanes, and avoiding the debris left by the hedge cutters, we rode back to Maghull. Just under 8.5 miles, but enough to get the joints going again. Hopefully we’ll get a longer ride next week on our annual Spring trip to Sefton Park to see the daffodil displays.

PRACTICAL GARDENING

We discussed what our gardens looked like after the recent bad weather.  One of our members had taken photos of her gardens to show how bare it looks at the moment.  She will do this every month so we can see the changes.

One of the group who is very successful with pots shared what are her favourite plants for pots are:

Pot 1- Put a cordaline in the middle, and put scarlet geraniums and deep blue lobelia around it.Pot 2. Pot full of deep blue headbourne lilies  These plants do not like to be moved they like to be pot bound. Pot 3. Argyranthemum Molimba rose which is a gorgeous plant which flowers until the frost. Edged with petunias. Wheelbarrow -Scarlet geraniums, Purple nemesis, pink and white verbena, pink dassia, trailing ivy, trailing dark blue lobelia. Nita also suggests using blue pots to add to the impact.
