24 people took part in the monthly walk today. Leaving from Ormskirk Station the long walk group followed the route of the War Horses travelling though Ormskirk out to Lathom Chapel where over 120,000 horses and mules were trained for use at the front in WW1. The chapel today is still a functioning place of worship and is surrounded by traditional alms houses which can be rented for the princely sum of £125 per month, although the criteria for rental is very specific and hard to achieve.
From here we continued through lovely countryside, with woodland paths, streams and open fields, where coincidentally we met the walkers on the short walk who were walking in the opposite direction. Following a quick photocall we separated again, continuing past the old water works, Lady’s walk, which was a favourite stroll for Anne Boleyn, before finally taking an anti-clockwise path through Ruff Woods and returning to Ormskirk.
Both sets of walkers met again at the Cricketers Arms, where a very good lunch was eaten. We were blessed with good weather, clear blue sky and sunshine, which added to the enjoyment of the walk. It was great to see new faces joining us today. All are welcome on the walks and we would be pleased to see more new faces next month. Details of June Walk will be posted on noticeboard next week. Also advance notice of a Coach trip to Moel Famu in July. This walk will be for walkers who can manage a climb and a distance of approx. 8 miles. No short walk in July
