Our meetings are split, the first half we have our main topic for the month. This is usually a talk and interaction of questions and answers with members.
Following tea break we then discuss any particular challenges members may be having with their Family Research. The answers can range from Web Sites, Record Offices, Collections, Museums, Libraries and other places with possible helpful resources. We have a ‘Pot Luck’. This is where members of the group, who have come against a ‘Brick Wall’ in their research, can ask the group to help. Their query is literally put in a top hat. Each month one query is drawn out and members take it away to see if they can resolve it, or at least suggest other avenues of research. The findings and suggestions are reported back the following

THE LYDIATE PROJECT
This project used historical documents, and the censuses forms from1837 – 1891. The project shows the development of a typical English Village through this period of time. It provides an insight into population movement, occupations, expansion of the village, the size and structure of the households, and of the village’s schools and places of worship. The project covered the history of the village from its Anglo Saxon rootes, through its entry in the Domesday Book to the late 17c. The Tithe Map of1844, and estate maps, were used to show field names and field ownership.
The culmination of the project was the production of a CD ‘ Lydiate’s People’ which gives a comprehensive analysis of this fascinating period of change.
The CD is available, priced at £3. All money goes to the cost of production, and the Family History Group for future projects.
Lydiate Project II. As a result of the success of the original project, and the release of the 1911 census, it is proposed to collate the new information available to show the ongoing development of Lydiate, a typical English Village.
The new project is currently gathering information, and it is anticipated that it will be available early in the New Year.
