On Monday, 19th September 2016, our cycle groups celebrated our 10 year Anniversary, by cycling from Lydiate to Liverpool along the canal towpath. We decided to combine the event with the Leeds Liverpool Canal Bicentenary Celebrations, which also take place this year.
Having gained the permission of the Canal and River Trust, the 17 mile journey was planned, using the canal, which runs through our area. Some of the riders also cycled back the same way making the ride a total of 34 miles.
The three Cycle Groups The Day Riders, Easy Riders and Pedal Pushers have over 30 members between them, ranging in age from mid 60’s to late 70’s. The Day Riders have been going for 10 years but due to increasing numbers, a second group, the Easy Riders was formed a few years ago. The most recently formed group, the ‘Pedal Pushers’ only started in January this year, with members who had not cycled before, or had not cycled for a long time. Having gained in confidence, they are now cycling on longer rides and using the main roads.
All the cyclists really enjoyed the ride and say that joining the U3A was the best thing they ever did. Although there are many more varied activities to take part in, they say cycling makes them feel younger, more active and healthy.
Ian
You did a great job Ian, well done, I bet you were pleased and that all came back “Dry ” !!!!
Thank you Peter. It is always worthwhile when people enjoy it. We were lucky with the weather this time, although we would still have done the rid if it had been raining, but there is nothing worse than being soaking wet on a bike.
“Dry” Ian, as in not fallen into the Canal !
Peter lloyd, Dave Griffiths, and Steve of Aughton and Ormskirk U3a thank you for the invitation to join in with your great day out on the Leeds, Liverpool Canal, we regularly
go on the Monday rides with Phil. We all completed the return journey, not by train !
