8 go to Barley

Eight members of the walking group travelled to the Pendle district last week to complete a 7.5 mile circular walk  from the village of Barley Green. Unfortunately the predicted sunny weather failed to materialise and we set off in drizzle, travelling over sodden ground to start the first loop of our figure of eight. The walk, although very pleasant, would have been better in good weather as the views as we ascended some of the many hills would have been amazing, however we were shrouded in cloud and had limited views.  Undaunted we continued on our route across very rough terrain in some parts, taking care to avoid the herds of cows with calves.

Driving Safer for Longer

Free Courses for drivers over 65 run by Merseyside Road Safety Partnership

121 Sessions- What does it involve- It is a free informal and confidential course, which aims to enhance your current driving skillsIt is not a driving test, so there is no pass or fail.  The instructor will discuss your requirements and concerns before the course and tailor sessions to meet your needs.  They will look at the way you deal with various traffic situations on familiar roads and make recommendations to help ensure continual safety.  Your tailor made course will be delivered in a two hour practical driving session.

Most drivers prefer to use their own vehicle, however if you wish, an appropriate fully insured manual or automatic vehicle can be provided.  Please ring:

0151 606 2143 and speak to Kathy Hall, if you would like to book a 2 hour 121 course.

Group Workshop

They would also be willing to run a group workshop for us, we would need 8-25 people to run a course at our U3A. The session can take up to 2 hours depending on the size of the group. The work shop would cover 5 areas for the drivers to consider

  • Life style
  • Eyesight
  • Mobility
  • Public transport
  • Driver assessment

The instructor will discuss each subject with the group give information and advice. The session is quite informal and lots of freebies and a work folder will be given out. We then have a go on the brake reaction tester which can become quite competitive!

If you are interested intake part in a group session please see Brenda McKenzie on a Tuesday morning or ring 0151 531 0207.  We would probably look to September/October to run this course.

U3A ANNIVERSARY CYCLE RIDE – LYDIATE TO LIVERPOOL

In order to celebrate our U3A 10 year anniversary and to commemorate the bicentenary of the Leeds Liverpool Canal, which runs through our area, we are planning a cycle ride, combining all three cycle groups, the Day Riders, Easy Riders and Pedal Pushers, from Lydiate to Liverpool, along the Leeds Liverpool canal towpath.

The proposed date of this event is Monday, 19th September 2016, commencing from Lydiate (Parish Hall), where the Day Riders group will join the canal between Lollies Bridge No. 17a and Lydiate Bridge No. 17 at 9.30am.

We will then join the other two groups at the park area, just after Maghull Swing Bridge No. 12, near to Maghull Baptist Church at 10.0am, for a ‘photocall’ for our website and/or newsletter. The local press will also be invited to take photos and do an article on the event.

From there we will set off (a staggered departure at 5 minute intervals) led by the Day Riders, to Liverpool Canning Dock, where the new canal extension ends. There will be stops along the way for refreshments and more photo’s taken on arrival. It is anticipated that the ride to Liverpool will take approximately 2 hours duration.

The groups will then make their way home. The Day Riders returning to Lydiate along the canal towpath, and the other two groups will make their way to Sandhills Railway Station returning to Maghull by train.

As the canal is owned and managed by the Canal & River Trust, we need to apply for permission to hold the event. An application form and risk assessment form have been prepared and forwarded, we are also required to provide proof that we hold Public Liability Insurance, which is in hand.

Please note that the above details may be subject to change.

Speaker Report July

Today’s speaker Christine Bradford, area fundraiser, spoke of the work of the Royal British Legion. Once again there was a very disappointing number of U3A members who attended the talk, but those who did all agreed that the talk was not only informative but gave a real insight into the work of the organisation. image
