Foodie Group – 10th Anniversary

On Thursday July 21st 2016  the Foodie Group met at Brenda’s house for a lunch to celebrate the 10th Anniversary of the M+L U3A. It was lovely to see so many of the group present, including our newest members.

To help us to get to know new members we split into groups of four, choosing people we didn’t know, to complete a  ‘Liverpool’ quiz. There were cries of “more time” as we became very competitive.

A colourfull and substantial lunch followed, provided by all the members. Brenda was sincerely thanked for hosting the lunch and for providing the quiz.

SUNDAY STROLLERS CHANGE OF WALK 24th July

We have had to change the walk for 24th July.  We will now be doing a local walk along the canal to Aintree and back through Jubilee Woods.  This walk can be shortened by getting a train at Old Roan back to Maghull, or coming off at Bootle Arms and walking back to Maghull.  If you have any queries please ring  01515310207 and speak to John or Brenda.  We will do the War Horse trail another Sunday date to be advised.

DAY TRIP TO ELECTRIC MOUNTAIN

Friday 15th July 2016  Our first port of call was the lovely Faenol Fawr Hotel at St.Asaph, for morning coffee/biscuits.  Such a lovely building with flagged floors, a tudor fireplace dated 1597 and a nice cup of coffee or two.  On we went to Electric Mountain.  What an incredible feat of engineering this is.  Roads through a mountain with traffic lights etc.  from the front it just looks like an ordinary shop. We boarded our bus and travelled into the heart of the mountain Here we were told about the work they do, how they have to calculate peaks and troughs.  Next time you switch your kettle on at 10pm think about the problem you are causing.  The recent European Football caused them some headaches on the nights when there was penalty shoot outs as the peak demand shifted from night to night.  We made a very glamorous group in our hairnets and hard hats – a sight to behold. The regulations were strictly enforced. No open toed shoes, mobile phones, handbags, cameras  etc. all had to be stored in lockers. A very interesting/informative trip.

Practical Gardening Group

practical_gardening_logo18 members showed an interest in forming the Practical Garden Group. At an initial meeting it was decided to meet on a Monday morning at 10.30 once a month and the following ideas were put forward:-
  • Identifying a weed from a plant.
  • To talk about gardening with like minded people
  • Exchange  seeds and plants
  • Would nurseries be willing to have meetings (Cheryl to investigate)
  • Allotment at Hudson School (Pat Snape had made enquiries about a piece of land at the school and David Ward volunteered to investigate further)
  • Where should we hold meetings? St. Andrew’s Hall, the Sanctuary and Hudson School were  suggested.
  • With changing weather what plants can withstand all the rain? – photo any in your garden that have withstood the recent heavy rain.
  • Hints on taking cuttings
  • Treating diseases
  • Demonstrations by members

It was decided to hold another meeting asap so the group is meeting on Monday18th July in 57 Deyes Lane at 10.30 with the subject of identifying weeds that members bring with them. We will then decide where to hold regular meetings.

It was hoped to get an allotment immediately. Brian Leach commented that it would need digging before planting could take place. A number of members are prepared to dig.
Members were asked if they would be prepared to be Group co-ordinator. No one volunteered as yet but members seemed willing to take turns in leading sessions. So all in all a good start to the new group.
