September /October in the garden

My first  task every few days is to cut back the  hanging baskets. Remove all dead foliage to encourage another display of flowers. They may be not as vigorous in growth but dead heading foliage will encourage more flowers before the frost comes. I love wandering around the  garden in  evening with my secateurs and  snipping off dead flowers but I have noticed how the nights are drawing in so its usually no later than 7pm  Another of my jobs is to start taking cuttings and saving seeds especially the old fashioned marigold seeds. Planting them each year amongst the borders seems to keep my plants free of aphids and other pests ,you will notice the hostas are looking faded and unsightly but leave them till the frost strikes then you can cut off the leaves if they are in pots put them in a shady spot to overwinter. Lots of us have dahlias one of my favourites you can leave them until they are blackened by the frost then lift and hang them upside in a shed or garage to dry before placing them in a cardboard box and covering with dry peat they can then be stored away under a bench . The lawn will need a top dressing of fertilizer if its to keep healthy but you may see worm casts just brush them off the lawn you can continue to mow the lawn while grass is growing.

Please don’t hesitate to phone me if you have a problem in the garden and I will be only too happy to help you can call 0151 5267034 or mobile 07935286184.

Norman.
