German group

This is a fairly new group which welcomes new members. Led by Peter Duffy, they meet at St Georges Social Club on Thursdays at 10.00 am. Contact Peter if you would like to learn or brush up on this language. Ed.

 

 

Graduation Day – Beginners’ Bridge

Things finally began to make sense for the intrepid souls who have undertaken the beginners’ bridge course with the U3A. All the note taking, the point counting, the mystery of the losing trick count, the memorising of bids and the agonising over transfer bids or weak take outs made sense today as the group took part in a Duplicate Tournament at St Giles’ Church Hall, Aintree.

With home made cakes, quiches, prawns, salads and tasty baguettes the buffet table groaned under the weight of delicacy upon delicacy. Soft drinks and tea were the order of the day as we were going to need razor sharp wits to get us through the afternoon. Continue reading

Ramble at West Kirkby today 13th August 2015

Twenty nine of us had a very enjoyable day walking from West Kirby station along the Wirral Way and going up through The Dungeon and back to Thurstaton where we went to the Cottage Loaf pub for our Lunch.We then used the No82 bus to get us back to West Kirby,   the train for Liverpool was ready to depart as soon as we boarded.All in All a good day.   Many thanks to Keith for Leading this walk

Thank you everybody who supported our open garden day and for the donations received from U3A members and friends who couldn’t attend the event. The final amount collected was £536.30 which has been sent to the Clatterbridge Cancer Charity .

Deadheading! Don’t forget to cut back perennials and deadhead all dead flowers – this will encourage more flowers and prevent the plant making seeds. You can also prune lavender and rosemary after it has flowered. Cut to the dead wood to ensure plenty of flowers next year. The garden will start to look a bit tired now but following these tips will keep it alive that bit longer. You can continue to cut the lawn and  rake and spike it  to  keep the  grass healthy. You can stop feeding now until late  September. Continue reading

Kirkby Gallery  Knowsley have made yet another coup with this local lads archive material. This exhibition of material from the Willy Russell Archive at Liverpool John Moores University celebrates a selection of Russell’s work spanning five decades from early works referencing the local area, to Our Day Out, Stags and Hens, Educating Rita, Shirley Valentine and Blood Brothers. Archive film of performances, posters, playbills, handwritten notes and scripts bring his stories to life, alongside items from his own personal collection to give a rare insight into his work

Foodie Group attend Italian Cookery Class

Members of the Foodie Group attended an Italian Cookery Class at the Olive Press Preston owned by Paul Heathcote.  Heathcotes have been doing cookery classes and demonstrations for nearly 20 years.  The recipes covered were
  • Mushroom Arancini
  • Orzo Pasta
  • Plaice with creamed haricot blanc
  • Grilled polenta cake with Mozzarella and easy tomato sauce
  • Chocolate Almond and Orange cake
We were given three different  rosé wines to try
  • Mirabello, Pinot Grigio Rosé (very dry)
  • Ancora, Monferrato Chiaretto, Piemonte (dry)
  • Alasia, Brachetto D’Acqui (sweet)
We then had a three course meal.
Excellent day, the good news is that they do other themes for example Spanish, Lancashire. We are aiming to get 25 people together so we can get a good deal. and attended another cookery class.
